Tom Hughes
“For me, painting means capturing the essence of a scene through dynamic mark-making and with accurate tones and colour”
A true ‘en plein air’ painter, Tom immerses himself in the elements, enjoying the process of making a picture as much as the end results. This is all weather, every season painting. Fuelled by decent coffee and sometimes swathed in Gortex, Tom chronicles the rich gloom and subtle greys of winter, the restless drama of the sky and the play of light over everything, from city streets to the angry seas. A keen observer of the everyday, his paintings are also evocative and atmospheric. It’s a balance that defines his work.
Starting his career as an illustrator, Tom turned to painting full time in 2012, when the lure of oils became irresistible. He hasn’t looked back.
