Andrew Bird

“I try to capture the essence of a place or situation…to simplify the form and colour of what I see”

Based in Derbyshire but also spending much time in Cornwall, Andrew draws inspiration from the bustle of coastal life and the raw primal landscapes that shape both counties. Using sketches, memory and creative instinct, he builds paintings that are alive with colour, contrast, and the interplay of forms and gestural mark making. Each work undergoes numerous additions through layering, scraping and scratching to reveal textural elements and colours that lie beneath. These techniques also uncover seams of depth and energy that go beyond conventional representation. Andrew’s paintings deftly conjure fleeting images or ‘slices of time’.

Andrew studied Graphic Design at Sheffield and Fine Art at Bradford. He makes full use of these different disciplines to distil and simplify the content of his work.
